Story: Bean was born here at the Sanctuary in April 2023. His mother, Coffee, came into the Sanctuary in March 2023 along with another mare called Sassy. The two mares were discovered abandoned in a field together. No one came forward to claim them and they were both heavily in foal. Coffee, in particular, was incredibly large and the team had concerns she may have trouble passing such a large baby. Thankfully, she had no issues giving birth and a healthy BIG baby Bean was born.

Personality: Bean has always been a bit of a handful from the moment he arrived. Full of Shetland cheekiness and sass, he is bold and brave. He gets on well with his field companions and is very playful.

Experience: He is still very much a baby and still learning what is and isn’t acceptable when being handled. He is good to catch and lead and picks up all four feet, although he can be a bit fidgety with the farrier. He walks happily onto the weighbridge and is good to worm. He enjoys a groom and has been used to wearing a rug.

Type of home: Bean is seeking a home where he can be a companion to another playful horse. Somewhere his fosterers will be content to spend the next few years working with him on the ground and allowing him time to grow up physically and mentally. We prefer our horses and ponies to wait until they are 4/5 years old before they learn to carry a rider – they have so much growing to do in the first 4 years and we like to prevent complications later in life.

***If you would like to find out more or think you could give cheeky chappie the home he deserves then we ask that you complete a foster application form in the first instance.
